FOSTERING COMPETENCE IN STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES: A HOLISTIC MODEL OF ORGANIZATIONAL AND PEDAGOGICAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT
Abstract
This study examines the level of awareness among public school teachers, specialists working in special institutions, and senior students at pedagogical colleges regarding the core issues of pedagogical-psychological support in the organization of inclusive education for students with intellectual disabilities.
The research sample comprised 567 participants from 55 educational institutions, including all 24 regional psycho-pedagogical support centers across various regions of Armenia (e.g., Yerevan, Kotayk, Armavir, Syunik, Shirak, Tavush, Lori, Vayots Dzor). Participants included public school teachers, special educators, and Bachelor’s and Master’s degree candidates from pedagogical universities in Yerevan, Gyumri, and Vanadzor.
The study used validated research techniques, notably a questionnaire survey conducted via an online (Google Form) platform. The highest proportions of respondents originated from Yerevan (23%) and Ararat (16%), regions where schools have been formally integrated into inclusive educational processes since 2023. Most respondents were between 25 and 50 years old and possessed higher education qualifications.
Analysis revealed that many respondents (those with 1 - 10 years of experience) work within the same institution in general and special education settings. Current challenges explain the predominance of younger professionals in today’s educational system, including the need to update professional resources and curricular content. Moreover, most respondents chose their profession independently, suggesting a high level of intrinsic motivation.
These findings support the contention that the study is built on a robust bilateral rationale: both the researcher and the educational practitioners actively identify core problems and propose viable solutions. Most respondents had pedagogical and special education backgrounds and sufficient professional experience.
